Leading up to the premiere of Pictures of Things the thirteen dancers from all over the world will be introduced to you in a series of blogs through an interview and a self-edited portrait. Today Fazle talks about his interesting outlook on life.
A colorful collection of thirteen dance enthusiasts from various corners of the world gets together at the Monday Movement Class in Korzo. Working with the various choreographers during the weekly open classes leaves a subtle but lasting trace on their lives. On the participant's own initiative, this inspiration will now be given form by delving into a creative process with one single choreographer. The group chose Amos Ben-Tal, who together with his collective OFFprojects will create the interdisciplinary performance Pictures Of Things with and for them. An ode to all the little decisions and encounters that shape our lives and identities.
My favourite sound
That’s a difficult one... I think that sound is everywhere, sound is always present, so I think I only have a favourite quality of the sound: that it is always present. Even the moments which seem completely silent have so much sound in them. The evening when you are laying down in your bed, you can hear the sounds of leaves, the sound of the water... silence is never there, there is always sound. That, to me, is something amazing; and if you consider how our bodies relate to sounds, and that we have sounds inside our body. Oooh!! That must be it then: the sounds inside your body!!
The thing is that I am not interested in separating the senses but constantly seeing them in relation to each other: where it’s a smell, it’s a colour... where it’s a colour it’s a sound...
The last time I felt very happy
This morning when I woke up and there was this video that I had prepared from the evening before about the seismic sense - the sense to feel earthquake -, and there’s a choreographer who developed a sensor for it and attached it to her body for a long time. She is also talking a lot about cyborg-ism and how developing new senses or extending the senses that we already have is very important and meaningful to re-define our relationship with technology. It was just an extremely inspiring video because it’s a part of the work that I am fascinated about. Waking up and being immediately busy with what interests me gives me fuel for the whole day!
What stimulates my creativity
Life and human existence, but also this whole notion of entities including humans, plants, insects, animals, stars, planets, basically every entity that you can find in the whole universe and is sensing the space around themselves. And that very fact that all entities carry this ability to sense is all the time transforming. I think that is my deepest inspiration for creative process.
What does dance mean to me
The diversity in meaning of dance and movement in my life that is coming from childhood to now, but it’s very much a tool to think of my own future. So it’s joy, maybe it’s a kind of therapy, it’s spiritual but it’s also very much a research for me; it is creation, so there are many layers. I’m still very much connected with my childhood and how I’ve been experiencing dance. I remember how I would dance in front of the mirror and imagine how my body would change and I would become able to make movements that I wasn’t capable of back then. That still has a lot of meaning to me.
Why I chose to participate in this project
I have a very essential need to develop myself as an artist-researcher, so I have to be surrounded by people that facilitate that process to happen, and since I wanted a bit more from MMC, I was very interested to see how this project could offer me more inspiration in terms of artistic processes. And it’s happening now with Amos, we are in the middle of a creative process and I am very involved in it, so this allows me to formulate where I stand as a beginning-maker and as an artist-researcher.
Pictures of Things plays in Korzo on Tuesday 31th of May and Wednesday the 1st of June. More info & tickets.
