The Brazilian Samir Calixto attended studies in drama, dance, and classical music at the University of São Paulo and the São Paulo City Conservatory. In 1999 he was awarded first prize at the Nascente/Avril Festival for his solo Eros. A year after his graduation in 2004, he came to Europe and decided to dedicate himself entirely to his dancing career. He developed himself as an autodidact and through working with the many choreographers whom he met in the Netherlands and the rest of Europe.
He reached the finale of the 2005 Best Dance Solo Competition, Leipzig (directed by Alain Patel) with his solo Wash me Up. Samir Calixto danced with Jérôme Meyer & Isabelle Chaffaud (Diable aux Corps), Gabriella Maiorino (ZOO), Amos Ben-Tal (We are not Humanity), Ederson Rodrigues Xavier (Staves), Karina Guizzo, Neel Verdoorn, François Chirpaz, Kristen Cere, and many others. Last season, he appeared in the performance íSA by dance group T.R.A.S.H.; the previous season also saw his first collaboration with ‘cellist Jan Willem Troost.
Samir Calixto created his first piece for Korzo productions entitled Beating Hollow, together with ‘cellist Jan Willem Troost, for the 2009 Voorjaarsontaken festival. They were selected for the Jur Naessens Muziekprijs for this production. In 2010, Samir made the short performance Névé (Die Winterreise – Part 1) for Here we live and now. He has since completed part two and three for the 2011 CaDance festival; the complete work will be shown under the title Winterreise on 17, 18, and 19 February.

Brazilian choreographer Samir Calixto has become firmly rooted in The Hague. He made a big impression last year with Winterreise, for which the song cycle by Franz Schubert served as inspiration. In 4 Seasons, Calixto again uses a highlight in the classical music, this time to explore the subject of transience. Two top dancers stand their ground against the force of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Spring, summer, winter, and fall pass in revue. They stand as a symbol for the turbulence in the history of our humanity: the birth, evolution, culmination, and decline.

During Food for Thoughts, artistic director from Korzo theatre Leo Spreksel takes you past Samir’s sources of inspiration, taking you from Brazil via India to Europe, and jumping from the Romantic Period to dance expressionism, landing finally at his new performance The Four Seasons by Vivaldi. workshop for advanced amateur dancers and (semi)professionals
The participants of this masterclass will be led to explore unconventional physical textures by altering their mind-sets throughout a series of intensive exercises. From there, they will investigate how a consistent musical frame like the Winterreise can have a powerful influence over the creation of unique and personal movement material.
After his success during the latest edition of CaDance, Samir Calixto will be rounding off and presenting his complete Winterreise Tetralogy at the 2012 Holland Dance Festival. The fourth part, Zero Kelvin, will premiere there, accompanied by the three existing pieces (Névé, Firn and Glacier). With this tetralogy Calixto closes off his years-long investigation of Schubert’s Winterreise. Dance, song, live piano and poetry give shape to the symbolic journey of man, on which he is constantly transformed.
In each edition, CaDance presents many talented choreographers. Make acquaintance with three of these up-and-coming talents, Samir Calixto, Nataša Novotná en Amos Ben-Tal, in our sampler arrangement. All three are gifted dancers (from among others the Nederlands Dans Theater), and all three have shifted their ambitions to the field of choreography.

At Crosstown, young dancers get the chance to discover and develop their creative ambitions. At the highest level, the most talented dancers work for a period of a few months with professional choreographers. This year the privilege falls to Samir Calixto and Guilherme Miotto.
Troublemakers by Samir Calixto is an homage to all the rule'breakers’. Samir mixes the fresh, anarchistic, and non-conformist raw energy of the young Crosstown dancers with two movements from Mozart’s Symphony nr. 25, written in the style known as Sturm und Drang.

For Winterreise, the Brazilian dancer and maker Samir Calixto took Schubert’s song cycle as a source of inspiration. In this physical and musical triptych, dance, singing, live piano, and poetry drive the symbolic journey of man who continually transforms. Outbursts in nature are set next to turning-points in a person’s life, and silence and volatility show the turbulence of the journey. In Névé, a male singer and dancer take on the confrontation with man as thinker during their quest.
