In the world of improvised music, the Doek Festival is one of the most exciting and important events of the year. This year the festival from Amsterdam opens with an evening of highlights in Korzo. Three standard bearers from the three improvisation capitals of the world come to The Hague: Natural Information Society from Chicago, Mike Majkowski from Berlin and Okapi from Amsterdam.
Pitchfork cited NIS’s album as the next best experimental album of 2015. They play rhythmically rousing, psychedelic music with a starring role for the three-stringed guembri. With alternative playing techniques, Majkowski conjures unbelievable sounds from the double bass. And Okapi is a fairy tale orchestra and new music laboratory with 11 performers, 8 turntables, 4 sirens, 15 bells, 9 drums, 10 wads of paper, 1 bagpipe, a handful of old instruments, contemporary instruments and a laptop computer.
