The Flamenco Biennial has built up a fine reputation in finding the cream of the flamenco crop. And they have come up with another wonderful project: an exploration of the influence of jazz legend Pat Metheny on the current generation of flamenco artists. According to flamenco guitarist Santiago Lara, who is part of the younger generation, the influence is considerable. High time then, for a homage to his idol. The young guitarist from Jerez de la Frontera chose ten of Metheny’s compositions and translated them into the flamenco idiom. Famous themes such as ‘Minuano’ or ‘James’ sound refreshingly new in his swinging flamenco interpretations. When asked, Metheny himself said how pleased he was with the project and how honoured he was with these ‘unbelievable interpretations’.
