The chirping of cicadas is not much more than a noisy mating call. These insects make this sound, which seems almost electronic, with quickly vibrating membranes in their rear abdomen. It is a love song that sounds tirelessly from orchards and thirsty grass fields on hot days and sultry nights. Mexican composer Carlos Itturalde used this natural sound in Love Song that he wrote for the Modelo62 ensemble from The Hague. He combines recordings of cicadas with electronic sounds and richly sounding harmonic progressions. This young ensemble is up and coming; they are a regular guest at Korzo and are invited to renowned music festivals such as November Music, the Festival für Neuen Musik, and the Gaudeamus Muziekweek. They recently finished a tour through Mexico and Argentina. Modelo62’s popularity is such that composers stand in line to work with them.
