The Netherlands is teeming with music theatre talent. This talent is given the chance to be in the spotlights in Club Opera. Two productions have been selected for this season. The Reclining Woman is an ode to Woman, inspired by the sculptures of Henry Moore. The life of Woman and her characteristics – physicality, sexuality, and motherhood – are storied in this performance. Composer Astrid Kruisselbrink was struck by the dignity of Moore’s female figures. Though some are barely recognizable as female, his sculptures show an unmistakeable fascination for the female body.
Surprising, new and challenging. Club Opera selects performances by exciting creatives, who are then introduced to the public. De Dood van Poppaea (the Death of Poppaea) is a contemporary multimedia opera in which emperor Nero is shown as a populist, a media emperor. He is forever surrounded by cameras and has great difficulty distinguishing between his private emotions and his public existence. Yet his pregnant wife Poppaea challenges him to do precisely this. This leads to a power struggle, with their unborn child at stake.
