Meet the "Pictures of Things" dancers: Simone van Dordrecht

“You will always learn if you don’t get judged”

Leading up to the premiere of Pictures of Things the thirteen dancers from all over the world will be introduced to you in a series of blogs through an interview and a self-edited portrait. Today we introduce Simone to you!

A colorful collection of thirteen dance enthusiasts from various corners of the world gets together at the Monday Movement Class in Korzo. Working with the various choreographers during the weekly open classes leaves a subtle but lasting trace on their lives. On the participant's own initiative, this inspiration will now be given form by delving into a creative process with one single choreographer. The group chose Amos Ben-Tal, who together with his collective OFFprojects will create the interdisciplinary performance Pictures Of Things with and for them. An ode to all the little decisions and encounters that shape our lives and identities.

What I wanted to become as a child
I wanted to be an interior designer because I think I got very influenced by my mom; she is always busy with changing her house and making the environment look pretty. I grew up in a constant changing  house full of magazines. So I’ve always been impressed and interested in interior design, maybe my family has this passion in their genes! Looking at Korzo now, I’m very impressed of what they did with the space here, especially with the light.

My favourite sound
Wind chime, but not made with ordinary stuff. I like the sound of wind chime made from glass, or wooden shapes, or metal. Natural sounds colliding through air. I want to make a wind chime from natural materials so now I’m collecting stuff. Maybe in the summer I will get to do that.

The last time I cried
When I was watching a movie, maybe it was the movie “Room” – no, that was the last time my boyfriend cried.

What stimulates my creativity
Everyday things I guess, how light falls through a window, how rain falls on a car window...  I don’t know, things with light and composition from daily life.

How the Monday Movement Class influenced me
It took away the hesitation to dance even though I’m still like a beginner-beginner-beginner. Before the Monday Movement Class I thought I couldn’t do this because I have to learn everything from the start, but I actually don’t have to because in MMC each level can join and it’s ok, there’s something for everyone. And also, I strongly believe that you will always learn if you don’t get judged.

Pictures of Things plays in Korzo on Tuesday 31th of May and Wednesday the 1st of June. More info & tickets
