Camiel Corneille is Korzo’s new maker in residence

The year 2025 is a year in which we welcome new makers in residence. We already told you about Faizah Grootens and Tú Hoàng joining us; now we also welcome circus maker Camiel Corneille. Camiel will create work under the banner of Korzo for the next couple of years and will show new work right away during Cirque Mania. ‘I hope audiences will think “oh, I'd like to do that too” when they see me perform.’
Camiel Corneille is a Dutch artist and circus creator. As a child, Camiel was already fascinated by the superhuman and pushing the limits of the human body. During his studies at the Utrecht School of the Arts and Codarts Circus Arts course in Rotterdam, he explored this fascination with extreme physicality and stretching (his) physical limits. Read more about Camiel here.
The art of the ordinary
Camiel draws inspiration from the work of artist Johan Lorbeer, among others. ‘I like how he uses something mundane to create wondrous images,’ Camiel says. 'The ordinary then becomes something to look at life differently. I try to do the same in my work, by looking as human as possible while being in the most complex installations.' In this way, Camiel hopes to make audiences part of his performance. ‘I always look for that shared experience,’ he says. 'But I also hope that when they see my work, audiences think “oh, I'd like to do that too.” Or ‘if he can do this, I can do that too.’ So not just sharing the experience, but empowering visitors.'
The transcience of the body
That vision is reflected in SENESCENCE, Camiel's latest work in which he spins and twists in a circular installation. SENESCENCE is about our humanity, and specifically transcience. Is transcience really inevitable? And if so, how do you accept the deterioration of the body? You can see an exclusive preview of SENESCENCE at the upcoming edition of Cirque Mania: click here for more information.
