The documentary Who wrote the book of Love? was filmed during the rehearsal period and world premiere of Jonathan Dove’s piece of the same title. In this piece, Dove’s love of opera and his qualities as a composer of chamber music merge together perfectly. Or as Dove describes his composition “Written to celebrate a friend’s birthday, Who wrote the book of Love? is a thirtyminute song cycle for bass-baritone and string quartet. By turns elegiac, enigmatic, sardonic and passionate, the seventeen lyrics by Alasdair Middleton explore love in a sequence of different poetic modes. The titles of each – Greek Love, Persian Love, Gallant Love, Cold Love, Gypsy Love – are echoed in a prismatic array of musical colours.”
The Dutch premiere of Who wrote the book of Love? takes place at the Jonathan Dove Marathon, presented by SENA, on Saturday 21 April at 20:30 hrs.
