Dag in de Branding - Edgar Varèse

The French-American composer Edgard Varèse was an entirely self-styled visionary. His approach to music was that of scientific researcher. Emotional or romantic display was not in his character. In the way that scientists in the last century penetrated ever further into the building blocks of nature, Varèse aimed to penetrate the essence and fundamentals of music and sound. He never repeated himself; each composition is a world unto itself. The variety of Varèse’s music is displayed in five groundbreaking works performed by Masters students of the Royal Conservatory as part of the Dag in de Branding Festival. From the flute solo Density 21.5 to Ionisation, the first work written exclusively for percussion, listening to Varèse’s music is to discover and explore new worlds, an exciting experience.
