After the successful and often-performed Eleonora, Frou Frou is the second solo by Jochem Stavenuiter produced by Bambie. Jochem created the melancholy clown Frou Frou, based on various clowns from Fellini’s movies when he worked on Fellini by the Noord Nederlands Toneel. During the tour of this production, Stavenuiter discovered that Frou Frou had yet much to offer him and the world in the way of beauty, poignancy, and wisdom.
Frou Frou is a disappearing species of clown archetype, not a loud mouth laugh machine, but a dreamy surrealist. He tries to understand life through naïve comparisons and mimed observations; but the two made up ‘cellists who appear and disappear without warning evoke memories of things past with their music. Tricks that Frou Frou only half remembers. Routines he never again performs. A trumpet solo he once mastered.
“The universe is a thought”, Frou Frou versifies after his umpteenth slapstick collision with a lamppost he seems incapable of avoiding, “It expands thinking with me.”
