The sound of progress
Longing for contemporary sound art that's even more experimental than Rewire? Then you won't want to miss this nomadic concert series curated by Cis de Gendt. Expect international artists who performed at MoMA, pulsating electroacoustic improvisations with tape and magnets, crackling contemporary compositions, computer music, and sound art that will have even the most seasoned sonologists recalibrating their ears. At Korzo, you can catch performances by Allan Gilbert Balon & Uta Guan Hey, Marc Baron, and Nirantar Yakthumba.
piano, vocals, objects, recordings
As an artist duo, Allan (born in Guadeloupe) and Uta (born in China) run the publishing house xyä édition, creating handmade books and audio works. They also perform together, and at Default they will present a duo performance for piano, objects, voices, and electronics. The performance follows Balon’s LP The Magnesia Suite (Recital, 2024) and a recording of Allan and Uta’s duo performance (released via Balon’s website) – both examples of an intimate play with presence.
analogue devices, mixer, objects, tape, magnets
The Paris-based artist Marc Baron has been creating electroacoustic compositions with tapes and analog processes for almost twenty years. At Default in Korzo, he appears shortly after the release of his new solo album Soleil-Néon (Penultimate Press). Baron’s music is both raw and fragile: acoustics, electronics, and magnetics intertwine, with chance and material processes becoming audible. He plays with contrasts and tensions between realism and abstraction, using cuts, shifts, and changing perspectives to continually reopen the act of listening.
This contemporary composer from Nepal, now based in The Hague, will close the evening with a solo performance on a newly self-built instrument. In his work, he explores the relationships between sound, tone, materiality, force, and geometry, and how people — both individually and collectively — give meaning to these relationships. Nirantar is the artistic director of the Kali Ensemble, where he performs as a musician and collaborates with a collective to compose new works.
