Embodied Freedoms- Context

Duration | 15 min |
What does it mean to be free?
In the month that marks 80 years of freedom, Korzo presents Embodied Freedoms — a series of dance films that make the deeper layers of freedom tangible and felt.
Is freedom a given, a right, or something you must fight for—again and again?
In Embodied Freedoms, four creators and performers offer personal and physical responses to these questions. Ukrainian choreographer Vladyslav Detiuchenko and Iranian artist Roshanak Morrowatian carry in their work both the pain and the power of fighting for freedom. Theatre maker Esmée Begemann sheds light on the invisible threads of intergenerational stories and how they settle into the body and everyday life. And four young performers — Sedra van Ruijven, Yadhira De León Matos, Olin Bikker, and Lilian Kafa — guided by choreographer Junadry Leocaria, explore what it means to feel free as a young person in a world full of boundaries, expectations, and change.
What unites them is their embodiment of freedom as something constantly in motion — sometimes whispered, sometimes loud and powerful.
The four films, each around two minutes long, were created by filmmaker and documentarian Ciska Meister. Together, they form the heart of Embodied Freedoms: a series that invites reflection, recognition, and dialogue.
In Unbound, four of Korzo’s emerging talents — Sedra van Ruijven, Yadhira De León Matos, Olin Bikker, and Lilian Kafa — explore the question: “What does freedom mean to you, and how does it manifest in your movement?”
Guided by Junadry Leocaria, they dive into themes such as water, queerness, and the experience of freedom in today’s world.
Through their personal responses, each dancer reflects on the connection between self-expression, inner strength, and breaking through limitations. With movement styles ranging from contemporary dance to Waacking, they invite us to explore freedom not as a single idea, but as something fluid, diverse, and deeply personal.
Discover Get Moving
Through our Get Moving projects for Young Talent, young people between the ages of 15 and 25 are given the opportunity to discover and develop their talents as dancers, creators, performers, and/or movers. These projects vary in genre (from contemporary dance to circus, and from breakdance to mime), experience level, and working methods. Some run for several months and focus on creating a performance, others center around (physical) research. In some cases—like this project—the starting point is a specific theme.

“In Case They Ask” follows the quiet echoes of history in the rhythms of everyday life.'' Through intimate movements, Esmée explores how acknowledging the generational path of the women who came before her can become an act of liberation.
Freedom begins with recognition.
Of the stories we carry.
Of the women who built homes out of loneliness.
Of the strength passed on in silence.
By honoring the past, we loosen its grip of expectation.
We reclaim the narrative.
And we remember: freedom does not stand alone.
Freedom comes in a group.

Through dance, we remember: freedom is not silent.
It trembles. It slips away.
And no matter how distant it may seem, we will keep reaching for it.
Again and again.
Because to move is to hope.
To dance is to resist.
This film wanders through the delicate space between what we think freedom is — and what it becomes for those from whom it has been taken. Inspired by personal experience and the voices of refugees and migrants, Fleeting Presence, unravels the illusion of freedom as something self-evident. It explores the tension between freedom as a right — a right that can be lost to borders, politics, and war — and freedom of the spirit, fleeting yet untouchable.
Meet Vladyslav Detiuchenko
Vladyslav is a Ukrainian artist, choreographer, and mover whose work is driven by a deep belief in the transformative power of art. The war in Ukraine forced him to leave his home and profoundly changed him as an artist, infusing his work with a deep commitment to using art as a voice for resilience and resistance. For him, dance is more than a performance — it is a language of freedom and a way to connect with what makes us human.

When freedom burns, it burns red.
Inspired by the phoenix — its myth, its fire, its resurrection —
Khorshid is a dance film of rebirth and uprising.
A tribute to women who fight for their freedom:
to move, to learn, to sing, to rise.
To feel the wind in their hair and the fire in their bones.
From ashes, they rise — unbroken, unstoppable.
I dance in their flame.
I am the firebird.
I am Khorshid.
And I ignite.
Meet Roshanak Morrowatian
Roshanak is a dancer, performer, and choreographer. Her interdisciplinary work is marked by a deep exploration of themes such as identity, borders, and the search for belonging. She investigates the physicality of memory, the fluidity of traditions, and the embodied experience of living in diaspora.
