There is something quite scary underneath that technological cuteness
Italian Berlin-based artist Angelo Petracca shows us that cuteness gets a dark side when you amplify it to the extreme. The cuteness that we see thundering past us in large numbers via social media today and the cuteness that is the core of Japanese anime and ultra-kawaii aesthetics. And yes, of course, Angelo also puts AI to the test, because to what extent does that friendly help actually influence how we experience our emotions, our identity and even our own body? KITTENS is teeming with glitchy movements that are perfectly controlled, almost hypnotic. Which makes us wonder whether it is still human. And where that boundary lies between the human and the inhuman now that technology is increasingly part of our existence. Phones on airplane mode PLEASE!
Angelo Petracca is a choreographer and versatile artist from Italy. In his work, he plays with contrasts: lightness and depth, irony and discomfort. He investigates how images we see everyday shape and distort our collective imagination. But also how something familiar can suddenly feel strange. His performances show ever-changing worlds in which meaning is constantly shifting, and the boundary between reality and experience becomes increasingly blurred.
His work has been shown at leading festivals and venues such as Romaeuropa Festival, Tanz im August and Uferstudios in Berlin. As a dancer, he has worked with Arno Schuitemaker and Milla Koistinen and Ben J. Riepe, among others.
