How well do we really know our mothers?
Mothers pass on life. And with it all the legacies from the generations before. The beautiful and the less beautiful. Cheroney Pelupessy brings her personal history to the stage in Mama’ku. First with an intimate 60 min. documentary by Sven Peetom in which we see her travel to Indonesia and the Moluccas with her mother. And then with a dance performance in which the Javanese Elly Lutan - who comes especially for us from Jakarta - plays Cheroney's mother, as if she always was. Everything that was not said before is given a place this evening. Maybe tonight you will look at yourself through the eyes of a mother.
Cheroney Pelupessy is a choreographer, dancer and maker with Indonesian and Moluccan roots. In her work she mixes modern dance with Indonesian and Moluccan movements. She investigates how stories from the past are still in our bodies. Her first major performance, KETURUNAN (2022), is about her own family history and the shared heritage of Indonesian and Moluccan communities in the Netherlands. Cheroney uses her dance to tell stories about origins that you don't often hear. She collaborates with people at home and abroad, researches dance in the Netherlands and Indonesia, and ensures that her performances really trigger something - in young and old. In this way, she builds a bridge between the past and the present.
