Kalpanarts and Korzo facilitates donations to The Hunger Project via the performance Superhuman: Our Inner Darkness. This international NGO works in 22 countries on a sustainable end to chronic hunger.

Kalpana Raghuraman recognizes the 'super powers' of the people with whom she works. The Hunger Project uses the same method and puts local village council members in their power to contribute effectively to a future without hunger and poverty. This is also the case in India, where women are the key to making a sustainable end to chronic hunger. Since 2000, The Hunger Project has already supported 175,000 women village council members in India through their leadership program Odisha's 100 - or rather: Superhumans - during their 5-year election period.

The theme of the performance Superhuman: Our Inner Darkness and the working method of Kalpana matches beautifully with the work of The Hunger Project. That is why Kalpanarts starts a donation fund in collaboration with the theaters, where you can donate to The Hunger Project. Donations can be as little as 1 Euro.

Superhuman: Our Inner Darkness

Kalpana grew up in the Netherlands in an Indian family. As a little girl she devoured many Indian mythological comic strips, in which to her surprise good and bad characters were less one-sided than in Western culture. A superhero could also be bad. This openness about the inner darkness that lies within all of us fascinates Kalpana. In Superhuman: Our Inner Darkness she creates a new superhero through a symbiosis of Indian dance, contemporary dance, music composed by Simone Giacomini and live vocals of Lotta Sophie Bakker. A hero who also dares to show the inner darkness, a superhuman.

Odisha's 100

Odisha's 100 is a network that makes itself strong for female leaders in India. A group where 100 special and passionate Dutch women come together. Who want to change the world together and invest in a clear goal: an end to hunger in Odisha, India. How? By supporting female village council members in their political term. A silent revolution is taking place in India: tens of thousands of female village council members in the countryside pull their village out of deep poverty. On their own, they already move mountains, but together they cannot be stopped. What can we learn in the Netherlands from these unlikely leaders? And what can we do to make their success inescapable?

On 1 April, Gemma Jelier will take up her duties as general director of Korzo in The Hague. She succeeds artistic director Leo Spreksel and former business director Aukje Bolle. In Gemma Jelier, Korzo has gained a director who is deeply involved and has a strong sense of responsibility for talent development and the importance of culture in society. The beginning of her directorship also signals an important step towards a renewed organisational structure that is geared towards the future.

With the succession of Leo Spreksel as artistic director, Korzo deliberated on the most efficient way forward for the organisation as a whole in anticipation of Leo Spreksel’s resignation. Spreksel has formed Korzo over such a long period of time and with such excellent results. It was decided that a general director should be appointed to which an artistic director and a business director will be added later to complete the managerial structure. She will appoint these positions in consultation with the supervisory board and various echelons of the organisation.

Gemma Jelier is currently head of the Bachelor dance department and coordinator of the preparatory program at ArtEZ Academy for the Arts (Arnhem). For the last six years she has been on the Raad voor Cultuur. Her previous positions include, business director at DOX, general manager of Springdance, business director with Huis & Festival a/d Werf, chairperson of the VSCD dance jury, and chairperson of the dance commission of the RRKC.

Gemma Jelier: ‘Actually, I’ve been secretly in love with Korzo and the city of The Hague for quite some time. For me, Korzo is the place that – directly and without diversion – invests in the development of dance, performance art, music, and circus. And all that in a wonderful international city by the sea that is constantly changing. But, it is also a special place for me because it’s where I started my career over twenty years ago… mopping a white dance floor just before the wonderful performance Bianco by Emio Greco/Pieter C. Scholten. It is a great honour and an unbelievable opportunity to be chosen to lead this amazing institution.’

Carla de Boer, chair supervisory board: ‘We are very pleased to have found someone so excellently qualified for this new position. Gemma Jelier is intensely dedicated to talent development, is convinced of the importance of culture in society, and is also well versed in business and management. Korzo can profit greatly from her experience in various advisory bodies. We wish her much success in her new position with the many great possibilities of our theater and production house, our international network and above all out dedicated and expert staff.’

Leo Spreksel, artistic director: ‘I gladly welcome Gemma Jelier as the new general director of Korzo. I admire her career, her commitment to and passion for the performing arts in the Netherlands. Korzo is a fantastic organization that has a prominent place in the field of the performing arts in the Netherlands. I am very confident that under her leadership Korzo and the Korzo team are on their way to a bright future.’

The BNG Bank Dance Prize (€ 50.000,-) has been awarded to three up-and-coming choreographic talents: Astrid Boons, Sabine Molenaar, and Ryan Djojokarso during the Nederlands Dansdagen festival.

On Saturday, 7 October the BNG Bank Dance Prize was presented for the fourth time in the Museum aan het Vrijthof in Maastricht. As in the previous year, the prize goes to three young and promising choreographers. This year, the prize goes to Astrid Boons, Sabine Molenaar, and Ryan Djojokarso. They received the prize, associated with a money prize of € 50.000,-, from Ina Adema, mayoress of Lelystad and board member of the BNG Cultuurfonds. On this occasion the new jury, counting five members, was introduced. The jury is chaired by journalist Annette Embrechts.

The BNG Bank Dansprijs was established in 2014 by the BNG Cultuurfonds in partnership with Korzo, the house of dance in The Hague, to offer talented choreographers the chance to take their work on tour through the Netherlands. The first prizewinners were Samir Calixto and Marina Mascarell, and last year the prize went to the young choreographers Dunja Jocic, Wubkje Kuindersma, and Ruykay Özpinar. Like these last three, the new prizewinners will tour together through the country with the successful theater formula DnasClick. The premiere of the 19th edition of DansClick is on 2 March 2018 in Theater de Hofnar in Valkenswaard.

With DansClick, Korzo offers the public a wonderful introduction to the latest generation of dance makers. The multiple-bill program will be framed with introductory video portraits and an Aprés-Danse where the audience can enjoy drinks and talk to the choreographers and dancers. The winners of the BNG Bank Dance Award present their work during the 19th edition of DansClick.

About the piece

Inspired by how the human desire for happiness can also be a necessity, a strategy for protection and even survival, this new performance Bending the Walls is inspired by the incredible courage and resilience that people show under extreme pressure, and which enables them to transcend the reality and escape into a world of imagination. Dance becomes a metaphor for the psychological, physical and emotional forces that we can address to withstand the pressures of life and continue our incessant quest for happiness.

INFO OVER AGHORI

In his work, hip-hop innovator Shailesh Bahoran is inspired by his roots. In surprising ways, he combines the compelling energy and virtuosity of hip-hop with elements of Hindustani culture. In the dance performance Aghori, Shailesh shows what total devotion looks like. The most important inspiration for this performance was the ‘Aghori’, Indian gurus who aim to attain enlightenment through years of meditation and training. Through unending mental and physical training, they make their way past countless sins, temptations, and emotions, to finally leave everything behind. Because only then can you experience the world in its true form.
